Independent Medical Examinations

Medex Pros is proud to perform independent medical examinations for the three largest providers of veteran compensation and pension exams : QTC, VES, and Optum Serve.

Through our work with QTC, VES, and Optum Serve, we offer fair, unbiased, comprehensive medical examinations to determine the existence and current severity of any claimed conditions, as well as providing a medical opinion to demonstrate any potential nexus between conditions documented in the veteran’s service treatment record (STR) and the current condition. Our examiners are adept at reviewing STRs quickly and efficiently to highlight any potential documentation of the claimed condition or, in the absence of such documentation, search for precursor conditions and/or exposure to certain environmental elements known to lead to the claimed condition(s). They then use this documentation to support a diagnosis and medical opinion (when required) that is reviewed by the VBA to determine what rating the veteran is eligible for using the independent medical exams established criteria, as outlined in 38 CFR Book C, Schedule of Rating Disabilities located at https://benefits.va.gov/WARMS/bookc.asp.

While the process of veterans scheduling exams and obtaining appropriate benefits can be a lengthy one, Medex Pros is dedicated to ensuring we can provide veterans being serviced by QTC, VES, and Optum Serve, timely appointments, high quality reports, and expedient turnaround times. We strive to be a leader in the industry, providing the VBA with necessary information to complete its rating evaluations with minimal downtime.

How long does the process take?

The process of applying for and receiving disability benefits from the independent medical exams varies greatly but often takes several months to complete. During this time, the independent medical exams reviews the application for completeness, then sends the case to one of the approved contractors (QTC, VES, Optum Serve, and Loyal Source). Medex Pros partners with the three largest vendors to aid them in processing medical exams required to complete the review of the veteran’s claim(s). One of these vendors will schedule an examination where a provider will perform a physical assessment and review records to determine whether a condition currently exists and, when necessary, determine whether a relationship exists between the veteran’s service and the current claimed condition, also called a “nexus.”

What is a Nexus Letter?

The first step in the process of creating a independent medical exams claim is to obtain a nexus letter. This letter is written by a licensed professional that outlines the merits of the veteran’s claim(s) by addressing service dates, locations, and treatment record notes to support a connection, or nexus, between the veteran’s service and a current medical condition. Medex Pros examiners are well-versed in writing these medical opinion letters to ensure accuracy and quality through a thorough review of available medical documentation, helping guide VA reviewers to the pertinent data within the veteran’s medical records to show a condition was “as least as likely as not incurred during or aggravated by service.” The veteran can help facilitate this process by ensuring he or she has identified and supplied any medical records that may be related to a claimed condition.

What should I bring with me to my exam?

Veterans should bring any pertinent documentation related to their condition, as well as any paperwork sent by the contractor. This paperwork is important in helping the provider locate pertinent information within the records. Veterans should also bring a government-issued identification card with a photo, such as a driver’s license, passport, permanent resident card, or other government issued form of identification. All other items necessary to complete the exam will be provided by the examiner.
